ASTM just updated the Specifications for Playground Equipment for Public Use. The warning about gaps at the top of slides has been modified to say slides should be designed to minimize entanglement hazards, Stairs that are over 48 inches above the surface must have barriers not guardrails, The swing specification has been expanded to allow Combination swings and now includes a Horizontal Impact test to test the impact of a swing seat that might hit a child. The sign/label spec has been changed to include warnings about helmets and drawstrings on play equipment and heat of playground equipment and surfacing. Signs/labels are now the responsibility of the owner/operator and must be placed so that they warn the user before the hasxard so if the warning is about hot surfacing the sign/label must be placed at the edge of the playground not on the play equipment. For a copy of ASTM F 1487-11 go to www.astm.org select Specifications in the left menu and enter F 1487 in the serch field.
